About this role
Accountabilities • Build, lead, and develop a high-performing platform engineering team of approximately 10 engineers, including senior and staff-level individual contributors, through recruitment, onboarding, coaching, performance management, and career development.
• Define the platform vision, technical strategy, and roadmap, prioritizing investments in core services, shared components, APIs, and internal developer tooling according to customer needs and engineering priorities.
• Own the architectural strategy for delivering product capabilities across multi-tenant SaaS, enterprise single-tenant, and government-cloud environments, collaborating with technical leads and senior engineers on key design decisions.
• Partner with product, design, AI engineering, and infrastructure stakeholders to translate business and customer requirements into effective platform investments and make informed build-versus-buy decisions.
• Lead cross-functional engineering initiatives that improve development velocity, system reliability, architectural consistency, and the overall quality of the application.
• Establish and promote engineering standards for service design, data modeling, API development, and platform integration, ensuring consistent adoption across engineering teams.
• Oversee the internal developer platform, including deployment infrastructure, developer productivity tools, and AI-assisted or agentic engineering capabilities.
• Maintain operational excellence across the team by defining reliability targets, overseeing incident response and on-call practices, improving delivery predictability, and ensuring systems remain scalable and dependable.
• Establish meaningful team performance metrics, monitor progress against strategic objectives, and communicate technical decisions, priorities, risks, and trade-offs clearly to executive leadership.
• Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, collaboration, and technical excellence while enabling engineers to take ownership of outcomes and grow professionally.
Requirements:
• At least 10 years of software engineering experience, including three or more years of engineering management experience, ideally with responsibility for multiple teams or other engineering managers.
• Extensive experience building and scaling product-facing platforms, foundational application services, or shared engineering infrastructure, with the technical depth to review architecture, challenge design decisions, and collaborate effectively with staff-level engineers.
• Demonstrated success recruiting, developing, and retaining high-performing engineering teams, with strong capabilities in coaching, performance management, and career progression.
• Strong product judgment and a track record of delivering platform capabilities that improve customer outcomes, accelerate product development, or create measurable business value.
• Experience defining technical strategy and roadmaps across multiple teams, aligning engineering priorities with product requirements, and influencing stakeholders at all organizational levels.
• Strong knowledge of modern cloud platforms, preferably AWS, along with Kubernetes, distributed systems, and scalable software architecture.
• Excellent judgment in determining which capabilities should be developed as shared platform services, owned by individual product teams, or sourced through third-party solutions.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts, build consensus, and communicate strategic trade-offs clearly.
• A collaborative, results-oriented leadership style, with the ability to balance long-term architectural investments against immediate delivery needs in a dynamic environment.
Preferred qualifications:
• Experience leading engineering teams that build AI-native platforms, including agent frameworks, model orchestration systems, or applications powered by large language models.
• Familiarity with platforms that support both multi-tenant SaaS products and dedicated single-tenant enterprise deployments.
• Experience as an early or founding platform engineering leader at a vertical SaaS, enterprise software, or AI-focused company.
Benefits:
• Competitive compensation: Annual base salary ranging from $250,000 to $270,000 for the specified compensation tier, with the final offer depending on location, experience, skills, qualifications, and other relevant factors.
• Equity opportunities: Equity compensation designed to support long-term ownership and alignment with business performance.
• Comprehensive healthcare: Health and wellness benefits to support employees' physical and overall well-being.
• Flexible work arrangements: Remote opportunities throughout the United States, with a hybrid working model for employees based in the San Francisco Bay Area.
• Flexible time off: Paid time off and flexible work schedules that support work-life balance.
• Retirement savings: Access to a 401(k) retirement plan.
• Technology support: Technology reimbursements to help employees work effectively.
• Wellness benefits: Wellness-related benefits available from the first day of employment.
• Team connection and collaboration: Twice-yearly in-person company offsites across the United States, creating opportunities to build relationships and collaborate with colleagues.
