About this role
At Moxie, we empower ambitious aesthetic entrepreneurs to build profitable, independent practices—without burnout, overwhelm, or guesswork. In just a few years, we've grown from an idea to a global, remote-first team now supporting 700+ practices nationwide.
Our purpose is simple: to unlock sustainable success for aesthetic entrepreneurs, at every stage of their journey.
DIRECTOR OF ENGINEERING
We're looking for a Director of Engineering to lead Moxie's Engineering organization through its next phase of growth and technical transformation. Your primary mandate will be to materially improve our engineering delivery velocity, predictability, and quality by identifying and eliminating bottlenecks across our software development lifecycle, modernizing our engineering practices, and leveraging AI and automation to increase engineering productivity.
You'll lead an organization of roughly 60 engineers, owning day-to-day delivery, organizational health, manager development, staffing, and engineering operating strategy. You'll partner closely with the Head of Engineering and Product leadership to translate these improvements into faster, more reliable delivery of customer and business value.
OUR OBJECTIVES FOR THE ROLE
- Become the clear leader of Engineering. Within your first 30 days, assume day-to-day leadership of the Engineering organization, establish an effective operating cadence with our Engineering Managers, and become the primary escalation point for cross-team delivery, staffing, and execution issues. Within 60 days, take full ownership of engineering delivery and organizational performance, with routine execution and management decisions operating independently of the Head of Engineering.
- Materially improve engineering delivery effectiveness. Within your first 30 days, assess existing engineering performance measures (Linear, DORA, reliability metrics, etc) and identify the largest bottlenecks to engineering throughput. By day 60, establish and begin executing a prioritized improvement plan with measurable targets. By day 90, demonstrate meaningful progress against the highest-priority bottlenecks, and by month four, deliver a material improvement to at least one major constraint.
- Modernize engineering delivery practices. Partner with Platform Engineering and technical leadership to simplify and accelerate our CI/CD pipelines, improve release frequency and reliability, and reduce manual bottlenecks across development, testing, code review, and deployment. Leverage automation and AI-assisted workflows to increase engineering throughput while maintaining strong standards for verification, security, and production quality.
- Make AI a source of leverage. Build on our existing adoption of AI-assisted development to systematically improve engineering productivity and software delivery. Within your first 30 days, assess our AI development practices and identify opportunities for higher-impact automation. By day 60, prioritize and begin executing initiatives across agentic development, automated testing, code review, and delivery workflows. By day 90, demonstrate initial operational improvements, and by month six, establish AI-driven engineering practices that measurably improve delivery throughput, cycle time, or quality while maintaining clear standards for security, reliability, cost, and verification.
- Set an opinionated technical roadmap. By month four Engineering ships meaningfully more customer and technical value per engineer, with capacity deliberately allocated across product delivery, architecture, platform investment, reliability, developer productivity, and technical debt, and aligned with Product and company priorities.
WE'RE LOOKING FOR
- 12+ years of software engineering experience, including 5+ years in engineering leadership and at least 3 years leading managers and technical leaders.
- Management depth. You've run a 30-60 person engineering organization through multiple Engineering Managers, ideally at a Series B-D product company, and you set a consistent management bar, develop and coach EMs, and handle performance, staffing, and org design decisions directly, including through a reduction in agency reliance.
- Operating rigor. You've built KPI systems (DORA, cycle time, reliability) that teams actually use to change behavior, and you can partner with Product leaders to surface risks, dependencies, and tradeoffs early.
- Proven engineering transformation experience. You've led meaningful improvements in engineering throughput, delivery predictability, or software quality across an established engineering organization. You can identify systemic bottlenecks, make pragmatic tradeoffs across people, process, and technology, and demonstrate measurable outcomes from the changes you've implemented.
- Proven experience building production AI and agentic systems. You've shipped AI in a product or SDLC with real standards for evals, observability, security, and cost, and you can explain the ROI impact of the work in detail.
- Technical judgment. You’re very comfortable with system design, software design patterns , and engineering processes & principles (agile, scrum, SRE, devops, etc). You’re comfortable reviewing and designing architecture, and in making capacity tradeoffs between feature delivery and platform investment, and know how to build relationships and earn the trust of your senior engineers and EMs.
- Comfort with real delegation and real authority. You have experience in building and shaping engineering organizations, from hiring strategy and people management to maturing the SDLC and org design. You’ve worked closely with founders and senior technical leaders, and also know how to bring the best out of engineering managers and staff engineers in your org. Health tech or vertical SaaS experience is a plus.
This is not a role for someone who wants to manage purely through other leaders at arm's length from the technical work; you'll stay close enough to the architecture and the AI roadmap to guide them.
WHY JOIN US?
- A true Engineering leadership seat at a Series C healthcare technology company, with an organization of roughly 60 engineers and meaningful ownership over delivery, org design, talent, technical execution, and strategy.
- AI is a core part of the mandate. You'll have the mandate and the support to make AI a material source of leverage across both Moxie Suite and how we build it.
- Above all, we're in this to empower small business owners to own and grow their businesses. If you succeed, Med Spas will remain the opportunity for independent owner-operators instead of being dominated by a small number of large chains. If that speaks to you, speak to us.
- We have much left to build. But given the market feedback we're getting and our founding team's company-building experience, we think we are writing the next great chapter of a real success story.
- Competitive salary and stock, and generous health, dental, and vision coverage.
At Moxie, we believe in creating a workplace where everyone feels valued, trusted, and included. Our team lives by our values: act as owners, give more than we take, move with speed and care, and simplify and learn every day.
We welcome people of all backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives to apply. If you require any accommodations to fully participate in the interview process, please let us know, we’re happy to assist.
