About this role

Accountabilities In this role, you will build practical API solutions that improve internal workflows while contributing to the reliability, security, and maintainability of the wider technical architecture. Your main responsibilities will include:

• Collaborate with internal stakeholders to understand their workflows, identify opportunities for API-driven improvements, define acceptance criteria, and break projects into manageable deliverables.

• Design, develop, test, review, and release production Ruby on Rails APIs in line with established architectural and security practices.

• Identify dependencies, communicate potential risks early, and seek guidance when technical decisions or project requirements extend beyond the agreed scope.

• Apply secure engineering practices when handling authentication, authorization, sensitive information, and third-party integrations.

• Investigate defects and API failures, use evidence to identify root causes, implement fixes, and add regression tests to prevent recurring issues.

• Improve system reliability and maintainability through code quality enhancements and thoughtful technical contributions.

• Work with stakeholders to assess the adoption and productivity impact of delivered solutions.

• Participate in domain modeling and technical design discussions with Product and senior engineering colleagues.

• Contribute to constructive code reviews, document API behavior and technical decisions, support less-experienced teammates, and help simplify development processes.

Requirements

You are a collaborative software engineer with solid Ruby and Ruby on Rails experience, a strong commitment to code quality, and the ability to turn straightforward business needs into practical technical solutions. You should bring:

• At least 3 years of professional software development experience, with a focus on Ruby.

• Proven experience developing and maintaining Ruby on Rails applications, including the ability to explain API implementation decisions.

• Effective Git skills and familiarity with established software development workflows.

• The ability to translate stakeholder requirements into clearly scoped technical tasks and identify when additional support is needed.

• Strong software engineering practices, including readable code, automated testing, test-driven development where appropriate, continuous integration, and meaningful code reviews.

• Awareness of secure coding principles and the ability to handle sensitive data and access controls responsibly.

• Experience using AI-assisted development tools, with the ability to independently verify generated code, tests, and assumptions.

• Clear communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively in an agile, distributed team.

• Adaptability when priorities change, along with a commitment to documenting decisions and supporting asynchronous collaboration.

Nice to have:

• Front-end development experience with React and TypeScript.

• Exposure to internal developer-facing APIs, identity and access management systems, or Model Context Protocol (MCP) services.

Benefits

• Fully remote work: Work from anywhere, provided you are legally authorized to work in your location and can meet your team's collaboration needs.

• 40 days off per year: Includes holidays and vacation, with additional time off where required by local regulations.

• Mental health support: Access to a dedicated mental well-being service through Plumm.

• Monthly wellbeing allowance: Receive a flexible allowance through the ThanksBen wallet to spend on a range of wellbeing options.

• Flexible parental leave: At least three months of paid leave for all new parents, with job protection for up to 12 months or longer where required by local regulations.

• Home office support: Receive a stipend for a laptop and home office equipment.

• Supportive remote culture: Join a globally inclusive, asynchronous team that values clear documentation, collaboration, and sustainable working boundaries.

• Meaningful technical ownership: Lead well-scoped projects from design through release, with guidance and support from experienced teammates.

• Professional development: Contribute to a technical environment spanning APIs, connected architecture, and identity and access management while growing your engineering ownership.
