About this role
Accountabilities: The Payroll Supervisor will oversee end-to-end payroll operations while providing hands-on leadership, ensuring strong controls, accurate data, regulatory compliance, and dependable business continuity.
• Oversee and review payroll processing across multiple states and legal entities, ensuring accurate and timely execution.
• Provide day-to-day direction, workload coordination, training, review, and support to payroll team members.
• Review payroll inputs, employee changes, earnings, deductions, taxes, benefits, retirement contributions, garnishments, and other payroll transactions.
• Process payroll directly when needed to provide backup coverage and maintain continuity.
• Investigate and resolve complex payroll discrepancies, tax issues, jurisdictional questions, system exceptions, and employee escalations.
• Maintain payroll controls, approval requirements, processing calendars, checklists, segregation of duties, and documented review procedures.
• Partner with Finance on payroll reconciliations, liabilities, funding, general ledger accuracy, and payroll-related reporting.
• Coordinate payroll tax and multi-state compliance matters, including tax notices, jurisdictional changes, and complex tax issue resolution.
• Maintain accurate payroll and employee data across payroll and HR systems and coordinate discrepancy resolution.
• Own payroll-related system requirements, testing, data validation, reporting, and process improvements with HR and Compliance.
• Coordinate retirement-plan payroll administration, including deductions, remittances, reconciliations, audits, corrections, and data requests.
• Oversee payroll activity related to compensation changes, bonuses, leaves, benefits, employee status changes, garnishments, and statutory deductions.
• Oversee timekeeping inputs, exceptions, and reconciliations as they relate to payroll accuracy.
• Support year-end payroll processes, required filings, audits, and remediation of findings.
• Develop and maintain payroll SOPs, calendars, controls, documentation, cross-training, and business continuity procedures.
• Support payroll integrations related to acquisitions, new entities, and employee transfers.
• Prepare and review workforce and payroll reporting, including trends, exceptions, and variances.
• Identify opportunities to automate, simplify, and strengthen payroll processes while reducing operational and compliance risk.
• Participate in payroll and HRIS system evaluations, implementations, testing, and transition activities.
• Ensure appropriate backup coverage for critical payroll responsibilities.
Requirements
The ideal candidate brings substantial multi-state payroll expertise, strong analytical capabilities, and the judgment required to manage sensitive information and complex compliance matters.
• 5+ years of progressive payroll experience in a multi-state environment; multi-entity experience strongly preferred.
• Demonstrated experience independently administering and reviewing end-to-end payroll.
• Strong experience with ADP Workforce Now.
• Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local payroll tax requirements, wage and hour rules, and payroll compliance.
• Experience with payroll reconciliations, payroll accounting, tax matters, retirement and benefits deductions, garnishments, and complex payroll exceptions.
• Experience reviewing others' work, providing payroll guidance, training team members, or coordinating payroll operations.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with exceptional attention to detail.
• Strong process orientation, with experience developing or improving payroll controls, procedures, and documentation.
• High level of discretion and professionalism when handling confidential payroll and employee information.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with a service-oriented approach.
• Ability to manage competing priorities and recurring deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• Willingness to be located in the Denver, Colorado area.
