• Identify and solve ambiguous, high-impact technical and product challenges, influencing both what gets built and how solutions are developed, deployed, and maintained.

• Remain actively involved in software development, designing and implementing critical system components, developing prototypes, reviewing code, and addressing foundational engineering challenges.

• Architect, evolve, and scale foundational platforms and systems across frontend and backend technologies to support new product capabilities and reliable experiences for hundreds of millions of users.

• Drive alignment across organizational boundaries, influence technical roadmaps, remove structural bottlenecks, and improve engineering processes and execution standards.

• Lead the responsible adoption of AI technologies across customer-facing products and internal engineering workflows, identifying opportunities to improve productivity, user value, and innovation.

• Apply modern machine learning, large language model (LLM) APIs, and agentic frameworks to production systems while balancing quality, performance, cost, security, and risk.

• Establish and reinforce engineering excellence through sound technical judgment, architectural consistency, operational rigor, and scalable development practices.

• Act as a trusted technical advisor to senior leadership, clearly communicating complex trade-offs and guiding decisions on major technical investments and product priorities.

• Foster a culture of ownership, experimentation, adaptability, and continuous improvement within a distributed engineering organization.

Requirements

• An advanced degree in Computer Science or a related technical field involving substantial software development, or equivalent professional experience demonstrating deep technical expertise.

• At least 15 years of experience designing, building, and evolving large-scale software systems, with a proven record of sustained impact across multiple teams or organizations.

• Demonstrated experience operating at Principal Engineer level or equivalent, owning company-critical technical challenges and influencing long-term engineering strategy.

• Extensive experience developing and scaling consumer-facing products, with a strong understanding of user experience, system performance, reliability, and operational excellence.

• Broad and deep technical expertise across multiple engineering domains, including several of the following: frontend development, mobile systems, search, databases, storage systems, concurrency, and distributed systems.

• Practical experience applying modern machine learning, LLM-based APIs, and agentic frameworks in production environments, with the ability to evaluate their benefits, limitations, costs, and risks.

• Strong architectural and system-design capabilities, including the ability to establish technical direction and build foundational platforms adopted across multiple teams.

• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts, influence senior engineering and product leaders, and build alignment with executive stakeholders.

• Strong problem-solving skills and sound judgment when making decisions in ambiguous, high-stakes technical environments.

• Adaptability and a growth mindset, with the ability to learn continuously, navigate evolving technologies, and adjust strategies as business and customer needs change.

• A collaborative leadership style focused on building trust, mentoring others, encouraging experimentation, and taking ownership of outcomes.

• A commitment to responsible AI adoption, including protecting sensitive data, validating AI-generated outputs, maintaining quality standards, and using approved tools thoughtfully.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience defining, building, and scaling company-wide platforms, shared services, or architectural standards adopted across multiple organizations.

• A proven track record of introducing emerging technologies, particularly AI and machine learning, into core products or engineering workflows with lasting business impact.

• Experience working in globally distributed, remote-first engineering organizations, with strong asynchronous communication and collaboration practices.

• Demonstrated ability to use AI tools to enhance human judgment, improve productivity, support experimentation, and increase individual and team impact.

• Experience balancing technical innovation with long-term maintainability, organizational priorities, and measurable customer value.
