• Digital banking experiences: Design responsive web and mobile journeys covering onboarding, authentication, payments, transfers, account management, and other everyday banking activities.

• User research and validation: Conduct member interviews, usability testing, and other relevant research to understand user needs, identify friction points, and validate proposed solutions.

• Data-informed design decisions: Combine research findings with product analytics, member feedback, and customer support insights to prioritize improvements and measure their impact.

• Stakeholder facilitation: Lead workshops and collaborative discussions to establish priorities, align stakeholders, and define effective design directions.

• Platform-aware design: Work within existing banking platforms, vendor capabilities, design systems, and technical constraints to determine the most appropriate implementation approach.

• Technical collaboration: Partner with product managers, developers, and solution architects to evaluate configuration options, platform extensions, and custom development opportunities.

• Design trade-off management: Explain recommendations in terms of member value, accessibility, implementation effort, and delivery risk.

• Prototyping and documentation: Develop interactive Figma prototypes, create clear design specifications, and communicate intended interactions and user flows to engineering teams.

• Implementation support: Review delivered experiences, identify usability gaps, and collaborate with developers to resolve design issues and maintain quality.

• Cross-channel experience design: Consider how digital banking journeys connect with branches, contact centres, and virtual banking services to create consistent member experiences.

• Design practice development: Contribute to reusable design patterns, digital banking evaluation methods, and practices that improve consistency and quality across client engagements.

Requirements

• Professional experience: At least 5 years of UX or product design experience, including ownership of complex web or mobile products.

• Financial-services expertise: Significant experience designing for financial services, ideally in digital banking, payments, lending, or related areas.

• Portfolio and end-to-end ownership: A portfolio demonstrating your individual contribution across problem definition, research, interaction design, prototyping, and delivery.

• Figma proficiency: Strong hands-on experience with Figma components, variants, auto layout, and interactive prototyping.

• UX and interaction design: Excellent skills in interaction design, information architecture, responsive design, and the development of clear, intuitive user flows.

• Accessibility knowledge: Understanding of accessible design principles and familiarity with WCAG guidelines.

• Design systems experience: Ability to work within established design systems while adapting components and interaction patterns to meet specific product requirements.

• Technical awareness: Confidence working with platform limitations, vendor capabilities, implementation constraints, and the technical considerations that influence design decisions.

• Cross-functional collaboration: Experience partnering closely with product managers and engineers to align user needs, business priorities, and technical feasibility.

• Communication and facilitation: Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present design recommendations, facilitate stakeholder discussions, and explain complex decisions clearly.

• Autonomy and adaptability: Ability to manage design work independently, exercise sound judgment, and adapt to different client environments, project scopes, and delivery expectations.

• Location and eligibility: Must be based in Canada and legally eligible to undertake the engagement.

• Preferred financial-services experience: Background working with credit unions or community banks.

• Preferred platform experience: Familiarity with Lumin Digital, Backbase, Central 1 Forge, VeriPark, Intellect Design, ebankIT, or comparable digital banking platforms. Experience with every listed platform is not required.

• Preferred transformation experience: Involvement in digital banking migrations, platform consolidation, or large-scale redesign initiatives.

• Additional strengths: Experience with service design, journey mapping, service blueprinting, advanced prototyping, or banking platform and API capabilities.

• Relevant education: A degree or diploma in Design, Human–Computer Interaction, Psychology, Computer Science, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.

Benefits

• Flexible engagement: Independent contractor arrangement with full-time or part-time capacity depending on the assignment.

• Remote work: Work remotely from Canada, with some engagements requiring regular collaboration during North American business hours.

• Project-specific flexibility: Scope, deliverables, weekly capacity, duration, and fees are agreed upon before each engagement begins.

• Rate transparency: Candidates can provide their expected hourly rate in Canadian dollars (CAD) as part of the application.

• Professional impact: Opportunities to improve digital banking experiences and contribute to modernization initiatives across credit unions and financial institutions.

• Varied assignments: Potential to work on member journey improvements, banking platform transformations, and concepts for future digital financial services.

• Collaborative environment: Work alongside product managers, program managers, developers, and solution architects on complex, multidisciplinary projects.

• Design ownership: Opportunities to influence discovery, strategy, prototyping, and implementation while helping establish reusable design practices.

• Scheduling clarity: Earliest availability and preferred weekly capacity can be communicated during the application process.
