About this role
Accountabilities • Underwrite complex mid-market employee benefits cases covering approximately 1,000–4,999 lives, applying sound risk assessment and underwriting judgment.
• Evaluate risk factors, financial information, market conditions, and relevant account characteristics to develop appropriate pricing and retention strategies.
• Apply advanced knowledge of underwriting guidelines, procedures, contract provisions, and applicable state insurance statutes when evaluating cases.
• Develop long-term underwriting solutions designed to support profitable growth, sustainable customer relationships, and the overall health of the business portfolio.
• Analyze economic and financial trends and incorporate relevant insights into pricing, risk selection, and account-retention decisions.
• Anticipate changes in market conditions and adjust underwriting strategies and recommendations as new information becomes available.
• Partner with colleagues and cross-functional teams to ensure underwriting decisions account for broader business and enterprise considerations.
• Serve as a subject-matter expert on complex underwriting matters and provide guidance on challenging cases.
• Mentor and support other underwriters, sharing expertise and helping strengthen technical capabilities and decision quality across the team.
• Independently manage priorities, move work forward, and remain accountable for underwriting objectives and deliverables.
• Build and maintain positive relationships with internal and external customers by delivering thoughtful, responsive, and value-focused solutions.
Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree preferred; high school diploma or equivalent required.
• At least 6 years of progressively responsible experience in employee benefits underwriting .
• Approximately 3–5 years of experience underwriting Life, Short-Term Disability (STD), and Long-Term Disability (LTD) products.
• Strong knowledge of underwriting guidelines, procedures, contract provisions, and applicable state insurance regulations.
• Demonstrated ability to evaluate complex risks and make sound, strategic underwriting decisions.
• Experience working with mid-market or regional account underwriting environments is preferred.
• Previous experience mentoring, coaching, or supporting the professional development of other underwriters.
• Strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret economic, financial, and market information when making underwriting decisions.
• Ability to balance profitability, risk considerations, customer needs, and long-term account relationships.
• Strong adaptability and willingness to adjust priorities, approaches, and recommendations as circumstances or information change.
• Customer-focused mindset with the ability to build effective relationships and consistently deliver value to internal and external stakeholders.
• Strong ownership and self-direction, with the ability to independently drive work forward and meet objectives.
• Excellent communication, collaboration, and decision-making skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a remote environment while maintaining strong engagement with colleagues and business partners.

• Salary range of $76,250–$111,500 , with actual compensation determined by factors including education, experience, knowledge, skills, internal equity, position budget, and market data.
