About this role
Accountabilities You will take ownership of embedded software development from initial requirements through architecture, implementation, verification, and release. Working closely with electrical, controls, systems, quality, and test engineers, you will help establish the technical foundations and development practices needed to deliver safe, reliable medical device technologies.
• Lead embedded software development across multiple product platforms, overseeing the complete development lifecycle from requirements definition to production release.
• Define and evolve firmware architecture and technical direction, creating scalable, maintainable designs that support integration, new capabilities, and long-term product development.
• Establish and manage internal software development processes in accordance with IEC 62304, including requirements management, architecture, risk controls, traceability, verification, and release documentation.
• Strengthen internal software engineering capabilities by developing practical processes and reducing reliance on external development resources.
• Define and implement software safety requirements and risk controls supporting IEC 60601 compliance, ensuring protective measures are effective and system responses to faults are properly verified.
• Develop and refine production firmware, including drivers, hardware interfaces, communication functions, and charging capabilities.
• Collaborate with electrical and controls engineers to integrate advanced charging technologies into reliable and testable firmware.
• Perform hands-on hardware and firmware integration, board bring-up, and debugging, using schematics and laboratory equipment to identify and resolve system-level issues.
• Develop software verification strategies and automated tests to validate requirements, identify regressions, and support product quality.
• Maintain clear technical documentation, ensuring design decisions, requirements, implementation, and verification activities remain traceable.
• Drive new features from concept through release, making sound technical tradeoffs and validating solutions on real hardware.
• Provide technical leadership through architecture and code reviews, mentoring, knowledge-sharing, and cross-functional collaboration while remaining actively involved in development and debugging.
Requirements
The ideal candidate is an experienced embedded software engineer with strong firmware architecture skills, practical electronics knowledge, and a solid understanding of regulated medical device development. You should be comfortable taking independent ownership of complex technical assignments while collaborating closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
Required qualifications:
• Demonstrated experience developing embedded software in accordance with IEC 62304, with a strong understanding of software lifecycle processes, requirements management, architecture, risk controls, traceability, verification, and release documentation.
• Ability to establish, manage, and continuously improve scalable software development processes suitable for a growing medical technology organization.
• Proven ownership of complex embedded software projects, including architecture, implementation, hardware integration, verification, and production release.
• Experience delivering embedded firmware for commercial products and collaborating effectively across engineering disciplines.
• Strong embedded C programming and firmware architecture skills.
• Experience with resource-constrained microcontrollers, RTOS-based and bare-metal systems, peripheral interfaces, and the development of maintainable, testable production code.
• Practical electronics knowledge and hands-on hardware–software integration experience, including board bring-up, schematic interpretation, and debugging interactions between firmware and electronics.
• Proficiency with laboratory and debugging equipment such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and firmware debuggers.
• Experience developing software tests and verification strategies, documenting technical decisions, and maintaining clear development records.
• Strong communication and problem-solving skills, with the ability to move comfortably between software development, laboratory work, and software lifecycle activities.
Preferred qualifications:
• Familiarity with power electronics, closed-loop control systems, or wireless power-transfer technologies.
Personal attributes and working style:
• Strong ownership, initiative, and self-motivation, with the ability to manage priorities and deliver results independently.
• Analytical thinking and a data-driven approach to troubleshooting and technical decision-making.
• Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple concurrent projects.
• Collaborative mindset and clear communication skills, with a willingness to support colleagues and contribute to shared goals.
• Growth-oriented attitude, openness to feedback, and commitment to continuous learning and improvement.
Benefits
• Competitive salary.
• Stock options.
• Paid holidays, including a week off around New Year.
• Unlimited vacation policy.
• Generous medical, dental, and vision coverage.
• 401(k) retirement plan with company matching contributions.
• Paid parental and family leave.
• Professional development opportunities, including conferences, courses, mentorship, and other learning programs.
• Company outings and team retreats.
• Remote work within the United States, with substantial overlap with East Coast working hours.
• Opportunity to collaborate regularly with engineering teams and participate in hands-on laboratory work.
• Approximately 5–10% travel, equivalent to around 4–6 trips annually, for engineering collaboration, key customer milestones, and company retreats.
• Full-time individual contributor position at Staff Engineer level.
